The Barbados Olympic Association Inc. has announced that its Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael on Wednesday, September 18 at 5:00 p.m.
President Sandra Osborne is running unopposed for a second term. A member of the Barbados Tennis Association Inc., Osborne served previously on the board of the BOA as director from 2012 and holds a number of international sporting positions, the most recent being a member of the International Olympic Committee’s Women in Sport Commission and Chair of the Ethics Commission of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). She is also Legal Adviser to the Commonwealth Games Federation, Chair of its Governance and Integrity Committee, a member of its Gender Equality Task Force and a director of its subsidiary CGF Partnerships Ltd.
Assistant Secretary-General, Cameron Burke is also running unopposed for another term in this position which he held since 2004. Burke has been a director of the BOA since 1996 and is a member of the Barbados Hockey Federation.
This year three directors are vying for reelection. Mona Alleyne nominated by the Barbados Netball Association has been a director since 2010. The former physical education teacher is currently a sports administrator at the National Sports Council.
Dr. Adrian Lorde is also hoping to be reelected as a director. Dr. Lorde who was nominated by the Barbados Tennis Association Inc. is a prominent figure in regional and international anti-doping administration.
The other person vacating the position and running for reelection is long-time physical education teacher and administrator, Esther Maynard. Maynard, nominated by the Athletics Association of Barbados, has been on the board of the BOA since 1982. She has received numerous awards for her work in sports, especially in the area of women and sports and was inducted into the Central American and Caribbean Hall of Fame in 2010.
Newcomer Shelly-Ann Griffith is hoping to upstage one of these perennial directors. Griffith, an accountant, is nominated by the Barbados Weightlifting Association Inc. The sports enthusiast has been involved as a volunteer and as an administrator of several sports. She is also the event manager for the Phillips & Springer Classic, the weightlifting competition which is in its fourth year of the B.i.i.G. Games.
Apart from the traditional agenda items, President Osborne is expected to give highlights of the progress of the BOA’s strategic plan. The membership of the Barbados Sports Karate-Do Federation is also to be ratified.
