Members of the Barbados Olympic Association Inc. (BOA) welcomed the President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Lord Sebastian Coe with open arms when he visited the Wildey Headquarters.
Lord Coe was given an extensive tour of the National Olympic Museum by Director, National Olympic Academy Dave Farmer. The President was also joined by past BOA President, Steve Stoute, Vice President, Ralph Johnson, Secretary General, Erskine Simmons, General Manager, Glyne Clarke and Assistant Secretary General, Cameron Burke.
Speaking during the tour Lord Coe said he was very impressed with the National Olympic Association. “I am delighted that this headquarters is so readily accessible to the local children and schools. It is very important that a country has its iconic sporting venue, it’s not just simply about competition it’s also about inspiring young people.”
He also added the need to improve our National Stadium, “It is important for young athletes to have a facility, somewhere they can see the best competing. Without that kind of facility, it makes it harder to encourage young children to sports. It’s vital that countries who really do love track and field have the opportunity to stage international events and inspire young local children to become the next Ryan Brathwaithe.”
During the tour Lord Coe was greeted by the children of St. Stephen school who were briefed about the importance of sports before taking pictures with the students and staff of the school. In addition, he also met with the current World Junior record holder, Grenadian athlete Josh Boateng, who was elated to see him.
