The Barbados Diabetes Foundation presented awards to nine Secondary School students last weekend at the Diabetes Global Village for their Sagicor Secondary Schools Essay Competition.
In presenting the prizes Chairman of the Foundation, Dr Oscar Jordan said that his organisation would have loved to have received more entries however they were quite fascinated by the quality of the essays received.
{mosimage}"Recent studies have shown that where children are exposed to diabetes promotion there have been a significant reduction in the number of cases of childhood diabetes. We are hoping that our Essay Competition will have this effect. It points children to the disease and challenges them to articulate modes of prevention. This we hope would influence them and their peers in their lifestyle choices."
{mosimage}First place in The Sagicor Diabetes Essay Competition went to Melanie Holder of Queen's College (QC) who won a lap top computer while Jason Yearwood also of QC took the second place prize of a Nintendo Wii. These two wins gave QC the school’s prize. Third place went to Malissa Millington of Deighton Griffith Secondary School. She won a family dinner at Ocean Park.
Consolation prizes of vouchers for starter accounts awarded by Butterfield Bank went to Chrystal Lynch and Jalisa Clements of Deighton Griffith, Anessa Anderson of QC, Melanie St. Marie and Juneel Delphi of The Lodge School and Sanjah Mahabir of Harrison College.
