$111 000 to fight Diabetes

Esso Standard Oil Ltd, members of their dealers and staff, on Tuesday February 9, handed over a cheque of just over $111 000 to the Barbados Diabetes Foundation to help in the fight against the dreaded disease which is responsible for well over 200 amputations in Barbados anually.

The presentation was made to Dr. Oscar Jordan at the company's headquarter's on the Spring Garden Highway by Chief Executive Officer Mr. Cally Boyea.

Boyea said Esso's involvement came as a result of the number of amputations performed in Barbados on an annual basis. He added that Barbados was said to have one of the world's largest percentages of amputations per#160capita and being the family-oriented company that Esso was, he and his members thought fit to make the contribution to the foundation to help the Limb Salvage Fund arm of the association.

The campaign was launched simultaneously at all the Esso branches on November 13 and climaxed on January 16. He said six cents out of every gallon of fuel bought by their customers during this period went toward the fund.

In his acceptance Dr. Jordan said that he was delighted to accept the cheque from the Esso family which he said, would go a long way in assisting the#160association in its Drive to Save Limbs Campaign.

He said that Diabetes was a major health problem that is affecting many Barbadians. "The fact that we have over 200 amputations every year in Barbados is very serious. It needs to be addressed!"
