Bridgetown, Barbados – June 18, 2014 – The BOA is issuing a call to action for all Barbadians to celebrate Olympic Day 2014 with a fun afternoon of activity at Trents Playing Field, Holetown, St. James this Sunday, June 22.

“It promises to be an exciting day,” says Dave Farmer, Director, National Olympic Academy of Barbados, “We recognise the important role that our Olympic Day celebrations in Barbados can play in the global effort to encourage people to be more physically active. Olympic Day is officially June 23rd but we are hosting our celebrations on Sunday, June 22 to allow for families and others to join us. This year we will be at Trent’s Playing Field and we have numerous activities planned including a three-legged relay, the bucket brigade, lime & spoon and the traditional Olympic Day walk/run. It will be a fantastic demonstration of inclusion, cooperation and teamwork.”

Olympic Day is a major event on the Olympic calendar and is celebrated annually with a series of celebrations across the globe. Under the theme ‘Move. Learn. Discover.’ the day is designed to encourage members of the public to participate in fun, physical activity and to try something new and different. This year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has teamed up with several Olympic champions to spread the word. Track sensation Usain Bolt has pledged his support and he will be playing cricket for Olympic Day, while 18-time gold medallist, Michael Phelps, will be swimming backwards.

The activities planned worldwide will all be based on the idea of Olympism in action, promoting the six areas of emphasis: sport for all, women in sport, sport and the environment, education through sport, peace through sport and development through sport.
