Barbados Port Inc. Contributing to the Beautification of Bridgetown

The Barbados Port Inc. has demonstrated its continuing commitment to the enhancement and preservation of Barbadian heritage with a donation of $15,000 to the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry#8217s (BCCI) Revitalisation of Bridgetown Initiative.

Kenneth Atherley, Division Manager, Corporate Development and Strategy, said the Initiative was a very compelling one and noted that the Board and Management of Barbados Port Inc. are pleased to be associated with it. He added that the Port was particularly eager to embrace projects such as this one which will create an environment for enhancement of the economic and social life of Bridgetown.

He noted that the Port has a necessary #8220symbiotic relationship with the city of Bridgetown, which will be augmented over the next three years with the development of a cruise pier, and as the Port participates in a Government-based Competitiveness Programme which will identify measures for more effective and efficient movement of cargo though all elements of the logistic chain. Lisa Gale, Executive Director of the BCCI and Mr. Lalu Vaswani, Chairman of the Business and Environment Committee of the BCCI, were on hand to accept the Port#8217s donation. Mr. Vaswani explained that plans for the Bridgetown Initiative started in October 2008, when 57 public and private sector stakeholders met at a Strategic and Envisioning Retreat.

During that meeting, they discussed the project#8217s objectives as well as the means to accomplishing them. The actions to be undertaken were meant to ensure that the City was safe, well lit, clean, generally beautified and a pleasant place to work, shop and visit. Coming out of that meeting, Vaswani said that the Chamber was about to roll out a 12 month business and implementation plan which is expected to be delivered at an upcoming Retreat on the Bridgetown Initiative mid-May.

The Committee chairman complimented the Port for its contribution. He noted that it#8217s more than finance, it is relationships like this one that lay the foundation for the super structure of a beautiful Barbados. Vashwani said it was noteworthy that the Port has always been at the forefront of projects for the City and this project will compliment what the Port has already started. Gale was pleased to be on hand and noted that it was Committees like these ones that drive the Chamber#8217s many initiatives.
